Ruth presented a talk at the Longlife Institute Library on the topic of ‘Creative Writing’. A hands-on activity based on the askRuth methodology was offered to the attendees. The learning concepts of collaboration and metacognition explained were easily understood to help in the writing, by parents who attempted writing at least an introduction to narrative entitled ‘A Theft’, for the limited amount of time allocated. As a result, parents had a foretaste of the askRuth methodology to get an understanding of the circumstances, in which students needed to put up with, during the period of collaborative writing in school, for creating meaning to a writing text. As the author of the book ‘Coaching your Child to Ace Composition Writing: Mastering the 5W1H writing strategy’, Ruth could only have time to guide the parents to collaborate with the ‘what’ question word, in writing up an introduction to the assigned narrative. Parents from the various groups did a great job, for each group was able to produce varied forms of very creative introduction to the narrative. Thumbs up! Parents!
