Seated on a dirty stool, in the company of my mother, I looked around and I saw hawker stalls virtually everywhere. “It smells delicious!” my mother squealed in delight with a smack on her lips, while I glanced over to the ‘satay’ stall, which she was referring to. Memories of that fateful day came pouring in like waves upon the seashore.
It was a late afternoon; I was heading for the food carnival, organized within a stone’s throw of my house. While hawkers were setting up their stalls, people had started streaming in flocks to sample the popular local cuisine: laksa, mee siam, rojak, nasi lemak etc. The alluring aroma of freshly cooked food, as well as the affordable prices charged, attracted their participation.
